Nipah Claims Two More Victims

Victims were from Selangor farms

Kuala Lumpur: Two workers from a pig farm in Sungai Buloh New Village, Selangor have died of the Nipah Virus infection.

A spokesman for the JE operations room said one worker died on Friday and the other on Saturday at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital. They had been hospitalized since May 15, the spokesman told Bernama.

The authorities have placed three pig farms in Sungai Buloh under quarantine since the two cases were detected. Culling operations in the three farms were completed last Saturday, the spokesman added.

To date, 103 people have died from the disease and over one million infected pigs culled. The virus is passed from infected pigs to humans via the Culex mosquito.

(Editor's note: Bernama report insists Nipah virus transmission is through mosquitoes although this has yet to be determined)
